M82 is a starburst galaxy with a powerful outflow of gas, known as a superwind. This wind is driven by supernova explosions and strong stellar winds from massive stars forming in the galaxy's core. The composite image shows long filaments of atomic hydrogen gas, highlighted in reddish hues.
