Polar Polygons on Mars

NASA APOD · Malin Space Science Systems, MOC, MGS, JPL, NASA
COSMIC MESSAGE

This image, resembling a city street map, shows naturally formed fragmented polar polygons on Mars. These polygons are interesting because they may indicate regions where water ice lies within a few meters of the surface. Similar polygons on Earth's arctic and Antarctic regions form from repetitive freezing and thawing cycles.
