To find water on Mars, the Mars Odyssey spacecraft created this false-color map of energetic neutrons. Cosmic rays hit the Martian surface, scattering neutrons. If hydrogen, a component of water, is present, it absorbs these neutrons. Areas with fewer neutrons indicate the presence of hydrogen, suggesting water ice or hydrated minerals in the soil.
