NGC 6995: The Bat Nebula

NASA APOD · Mike Taivalmaa
COSMIC MESSAGE

What looks like a bat with outstretched wings is a section of the Veil Nebula, NGC 6995, in Cygnus. This cloud of gas is part of a supernova remnant, the expanding debris from a star that exploded thousands of years ago. The entire Veil Nebula spans about three degrees in the sky, but this bat-like section is about half a degree, the apparent size of the Moon.
