This image of the Sun, taken on September 22, 2001, was recorded using the ultraviolet light emitted by eleven-times ionized iron. This specific type of iron, with eleven electrons stripped away by frantic collisions, exists at temperatures over 2 million degrees Fahrenheit. The EIT camera on the SOHO spacecraft, a continuous solar observatory, captured this view of our star.
