Supernova Remnant Imaged in Gamma Rays

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Gamma rays are the most energetic form of light, a billion times more energetic than medical X-rays. They are difficult to image because they penetrate telescope lenses and mirrors. The HESS experiment, an array of telescopes, produced this image of a supernova remnant. It detects gamma-ray induced atmospheric flashes, providing a resolved view at extreme gamma-ray energies.
