NGC 2440: Cocoon of a New White Dwarf
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
NGC 2440 is a planetary nebula, the cocoon cast off by a dying star. This nebula contains one of the hottest white dwarf stars known, visible as the bright dot near the center of the image. Our Sun will also become a white dwarf, but not for another five billion years. The ejected shell of gas creates a beautiful and complex structure in space.
