NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

V838 Monocerotis, a variable star near the edge of our galaxy, erupted in 2002. Since then, its light has been expanding through the dust clouds around it, creating a light echo. This image, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in October 2004, captures the ongoing expansion of this light echo. Astronomers continue to monitor the star's dusty environment as it is illuminated by the flash.
