COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet Machholz offered good views for northern hemisphere observers in January 2005. At its closest approach to Earth, the comet passed near the Pleiades star cluster on January 7th and the double star cluster in Perseus on January 27th. This telephoto time exposure shows the comet's long, faint tail, which was visible to the unaided eye from dark locations and an easy target for binoculars or small telescopes.
