Eclipsed Moon in Infrared
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
In 1996, the MSX satellite's SPIRIT III infrared telescope captured this view of a total lunar eclipse from Earth orbit. During the 70 minutes of totality, the Moon was completely immersed in Earth's shadow. The bright spots in the image show warmer areas on the lunar surface. Infrared light, which humans feel as heat, reveals details invisible to the naked eye.
