The Colliding Galaxies of NGC 520
NASA APOD · Gemini Obs.
COSMIC MESSAGE
NGC 520 is a jumble of stars, gas, and dust that is actually two disk galaxies in the process of colliding. The collision has created a long tail of stars extending from the bottom of the image. A prominent band of dust runs diagonally across the center, obscuring parts of the merging galaxies. This kind of interaction is common in the universe, shaping how galaxies evolve.
