The Boomerang Nebula in Polarized Light
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Boomerang Nebula is one of the coldest places in the universe, with gas cooled to just one degree above absolute zero. This is due to a high-speed wind of gas and dust blowing from its central star at nearly 600,000 kilometers per hour. The nebula's symmetric shape, seen here in polarized light, is still a mystery. It might be due to a central disk of dense gas or a magnetic field. This image helps astronomers study how stars evolve and shed their outer layers.
