This close-up of Comet Tempel 1 was taken by the Deep Impact probe just moments before it collided with the comet. The images, taken at 5 meters per pixel, show the comet's nucleus in detail. Scientists studied the resulting debris cloud to learn more about the makeup of comets, which are primordial chunks of our solar system's material. The mission helped us understand the early solar system.
