IC 1396 is an emission nebula in Cepheus, energized by a bright, bluish central star. This star-forming region spans hundreds of light-years and is about 3,000 light-years from Earth. The image shows glowing cosmic gas mixed with dark dust clouds. One of the notable dark shapes within the nebula is the winding Elephant's Trunk Nebula, located just below the center. This region provides a glimpse into the birthplaces of stars.
