IC 1396 H-Alpha Close-Up
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
This close-up of IC 1396, an active star-forming region in Cepheus, shows clouds of glowing hydrogen gas mingling with dark dust lanes. Energetic ultraviolet light from hot, young stars strips electrons from surrounding hydrogen atoms. As these electrons recombine, they emit light in a characteristic pattern of bright spectral lines, visible in this emission nebula. IC 1396 is about 2,000 light-years away, a stellar nursery in our galaxy.
