A Roll Cloud Over Missouri
NASA APOD · Dan Bush
(Missouri Skies)
COSMIC MESSAGE
This rare formation is a roll cloud, which can form near advancing cold fronts. As a storm front's downdraft pushes moist, warm air upward, it cools and forms this distinctive, long cloud. Unlike shelf clouds, roll clouds have air circulating along their horizontal axis and are not associated with tornadoes.
