M83, the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy, is one of the closest and brightest spiral galaxies. Its majestic spiral arms are visible with binoculars in the constellation of Hydra. Discovered 250 years ago, M83 is a barred spiral galaxy, much like our own Milky Way. This image was captured by the Very Large Telescope.
