COSMIC MESSAGE

The vast emission nebula N44 in the Large Magellanic Cloud has a large, 250 light-year hole. Astronomers are trying to determine its cause. One possibility, particle winds from massive stars inside the bubble, has been found inconsistent with measured wind velocities. Another idea is that expanding shells from old supernovae sculpted the hole.
