The N44 Emission Nebula

NASA APOD · WFI, MPG/ESO 2.2-m Telescope, La Silla, ESO
COSMIC MESSAGE

N44 is a large and complex nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, our galactic neighbor. It contains numerous massive, bright stars, dark dust lanes, and vast clouds of hydrogen gas that glow red. This red color comes from hydrogen atoms re-acquiring electrons that were knocked away by the energetic light from those massive stars.
