NGC 1999: South of Orion

NASA APOD · Robert Gendler
COSMIC MESSAGE

South of the Orion Nebula lies NGC 1999, a bright blue reflection nebula. It's marked by a dark, inverted T-shape at the lower left, a dense cloud of gas and dust known as a Bok globule. This dark shape is seen in silhouette against the bright nebula and is likely a site where future stars will form. NGC 1999 is illuminated by nearby stars and is part of the Orion molecular cloud complex, about 1,500 light-years away.
