NASA APOD · Jim Kirkpatrick & Brigitte Heiter-Kirkpatrick
COSMIC MESSAGE

In 2000, two photographers near Lake Tahoe captured an unusual red column of light rising from the setting sun. This phenomenon, known as a Sun Pillar, happens when sunlight reflects off ice crystals in the atmosphere. The image shows the red column above Lake Tahoe and snow-capped mountains.
