The Flaming Star Nebula from CFHT

NASA APOD · Jean-Charles Cuillandre
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Flaming Star Nebula gets its name from its rippling dust and gas lanes. The bright star AE Aurigae, visible to the left, is hot enough to ionize the surrounding gas. When protons recapture electrons, red light is often emitted, while the purple regions show a mix of this red light and the star's blue light.
