This image shows unusually bright soil on Mars, uncovered by the robotic rover Spirit. Spirit unexpectedly found this batch last month while moving towards its winter hibernation spot on McCool Hill. Instruments on Spirit have determined the soil contains a high content of salts, including iron-bearing sulfates. Scientists hypothesize that these salts remain after water evaporated.
