East of Antares, the Pipe Nebula stretches across the crowded star fields of the Milky Way's center. This dark nebula, cataloged by E. E. Barnard, is made of obscuring interstellar dust clouds. These clouds are seen in silhouette against the background stars. Its combined shape suggests smoke rising from a pipe, giving it its popular name.
