Explosions from White Dwarf Star RS Oph

COSMIC MESSAGE
The binary star system RS Ophiuchi experiences spectacular explosions about every 20 years. A red giant star dumps hydrogen gas onto a white dwarf companion, triggering a thermonuclear explosion on the white dwarf's surface. These nova explosions cause RS Oph to brighten enough to be seen with the unaided eye, despite being 2,000 light-years away.
