COSMIC MESSAGE

Charles Messier recorded M27, the Dumbbell Nebula, as number 27 on his list of objects that are not comets. Twentieth-century astronomers classified it as a planetary nebula, though it is not a planet. M27 is a gaseous emission nebula formed as a sun-like star sheds its outer layers at the end of its life.
