M66 is a spiral galaxy about 35 million light-years away. This image, taken by the Very Large Telescopes in Chile, shows its striking dust lanes and bright star-forming regions. It is about 100,000 light-years across. Astronomers briefly paused their search for distant quasars to capture this view of a nearby galaxy.
