Elliptical Galaxy Centaurus A from CFHT

NASA APOD · Jean-Charles Cuillandre
COSMIC MESSAGE

Centaurus A, also known as NGC 5128, is a peculiar galaxy. Its red stars and round shape are characteristic of a giant elliptical galaxy, but it has dramatic dust lanes that run across its center. These dust lanes are so thick they almost completely obscure the galaxy's center in visible light. The Canadian-French-Hawaii Telescope captured this image.
