A Backward Sunspot and the New Solar Cycle

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Sunspot 905, seen here, is a marker for the beginning of a new solar magnetic cycle. The Sun's magnetic field reverses every 11 years, a cycle observed for centuries through sunspot activity. We are currently near solar minimum, starting a progression towards the next solar maximum. This particular sunspot's reversed polarity is a key indicator of this new cycle.
