Last week, a long-lasting, diffuse green aurora appeared over Lake Superior at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan. Auroras are caused by energetic particles from the Sun impacting Earth's magnetic environment. This image captures the sense of wonder experienced when watching such a display, with the green glow along the northern horizon.
