An Erupting Solar Prominence from SOHO
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Sun remains active, even years after its solar maximum. This image from the SOHO spacecraft shows a solar prominence erupting in 2002, releasing electrons and ions into the solar system. Prominences, sunspots, and the solar cycle are all driven by the Sun's dynamic magnetic field. This image was taken in the ultraviolet light emitted by ionized helium.
