RCW 86: Historical Supernova Remnant

In 185 AD, Chinese astronomers recorded a new star, thought to be the earliest documented supernova. Data from XMM-Newton and Chandra now suggest that supernova remnant RCW 86 is the debris from that explosion. Their composite X-ray view shows the expanding shell of gas from the historical event.
