V838 Mon: Echoes from the Edge

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

V838 Monocerotis, a variable star near the edge of our galaxy, erupted in 2002. Light from that outburst is still echoing through surrounding dust shells, illuminating them progressively. The Hubble Space Telescope captured this image of those illuminated dust swirls, about 20,000 light-years from the Sun.
