Mercury and the Chromosphere

NASA APOD · Phil Jones
COSMIC MESSAGE

During Wednesday's transit of Mercury, astronomer Phil Jones captured this detailed image of the Sun using an H-alpha filter. This filter allows only the red light from hydrogen atoms to pass through, emphasizing the solar chromosphere. The image shows Mercury's silhouette along with a network of cells, dark filaments, spicules, and prominences.
