The Far Side of the Moon

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Earth's Moon always shows us its familiar near side due to synchronous rotation. However, from lunar orbit, astronauts saw the far side, which is heavily cratered and looks very different. This image from Apollo 16's mapping camera shows the transition from the near side's eastern edge to the rugged far side. The differences in geology between the two sides are still a subject of study.
