Hale-Bopp: The Great Comet of 1997

NASA APOD · Jerry Lodriguss (Catching the Light)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet Hale-Bopp, a dazzling spectacle ten years ago, is captured here shortly after its closest approach to the Sun on April 1, 1997. It displays two distinct tails: a whitish dust tail and a blue ion tail. The ion tail stretches over ten degrees across the northern sky, fading near the double star clusters in Perseus. Its head lies near Almach, a bright star in the constellation Andromeda.
