M87's Central Black Hole in Polarized Light

This image shows the intrinsic spin direction, or polarization, of radio waves from the supermassive black hole at the center of elliptical galaxy M87. These radio waves are produced by the powerful magnetic field surrounding the black hole. The data for this image was collected by the Event Horizon Telescope, a global network of radio telescopes, revealing the structure of the black hole's jets.
