Exploring the Antennae

COSMIC MESSAGE
About 60 million light-years away in the constellation Corvus, two large galaxies, NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, are colliding. While stars rarely collide during this slow, hundreds-of-millions-of-years-long event, their gas and dust clouds often do. This triggers intense star formation near the center of the cosmic wreckage. This view spans over 500 thousand light-years and reveals other galaxies in the background.
