Three Years of Saturn

NASA APOD · Peter Wienerroither
COSMIC MESSAGE

This illustration tracks Saturn's movement across Earth's night sky over three years, using an image from March as a base. Saturn's position is marked every two weeks from August 2005 through September 2008. Over this period, Saturn appears to reverse its eastward drift, tracing out three flattened curves. This periodic backward motion, called retrograde motion, is an illusion caused by Earth's faster orbit around the Sun.
