The Milky Way Near the Southern Cross

NASA APOD · Yuri Beletsky
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Southern Cross is a familiar asterism in the southern sky, topped by the yellowish star Gamma Crucis. A line from Gamma Crucis through Alpha Crucis, the blue star at the bottom of the cross, points toward the south celestial pole. This colorful skyscape, recorded over La Frontera, Chile, shows the glow of the southern Milky Way. The dark expanse of the Coal Sack Nebula lies just below the Southern Cross.
