Steep Cliffs on Mars

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Near the North Pole of Mars are vertical cliffs nearly two kilometers high. The image shows red areas of rock and sand, white areas of ice, and dark areas thought to be volcanic ash. These cliffs are believed to border volcanic calderas. While extreme, they are not as deep as other canyons in our solar system, such as Earth's Colca Canyon.
