When a Space Shuttle lands in California, it returns to Florida on the back of a modified Boeing 747. NASA operates two of these Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, or SCAs, to ferry the orbiters. These commercial 747s are strengthened with struts, stabilizers, and electronic monitors to carry the massive shuttle. The combined length of the aircraft and shuttle is about 70 meters.
