Markarian's Eyes

NASA APOD · Ken Crawford (Rancho Del Sol Observatory)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Markarian's Chain, a string of galaxies in the Virgo Galaxy Cluster, includes these two interacting galaxies, NGC 4438 and NGC 4435, also known as The Eyes. About 50 million light-years away, they appear 100,000 light-years apart, but likely approached within 16,000 light-years in the past. Gravitational tides from this encounter have ripped material from NGC 4438.
