COSMIC MESSAGE
As spring arrived in Mars's Northern Hemisphere in 2004, dark spots appeared on the defrosted dunes. Thinner ice regions thaw first, revealing the darker sand beneath, which then absorbs more sunlight, accelerating the melt. This process might involve sandy jets exploding through the thinning ice. By summer, the dunes were completely thawed and dark.
