COSMIC MESSAGE
Messier 17, also known as the Omega Nebula, is a star factory in Sagittarius. Stellar winds and radiation from hot, massive stars have carved away the surrounding gas and dust. This process creates the cavernous appearance and undulating shapes seen in the image. The nebula is about 5,500 light-years away and spans almost 50 light-years.
