The Tail of a Wonderful Star

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Mira, Omicron Ceti, was a 'wonderful star' to 17th-century astronomers because its brightness changed dramatically. Now, modern astronomers have found an even more surprising feature: an enormous, comet-like tail. This tail, nearly 13 light-years long, was discovered using ultraviolet data from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer. Mira is a red giant star, shedding material as it moves through space.
