NASA APOD · R. Ibata (Strasbourg Observatory, ULP) et al., 2MASS, NASA
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Canis Major Dwarf galaxy is the closest galaxy to our Milky Way. It sits only 42,000 light-years from the galactic center, much closer than the Large Magellanic Cloud or the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy. This discovery updated our understanding of our immediate cosmic neighborhood.
