Orion's Horsehead Nebula

NASA APOD · Victor Bertol
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Horsehead Nebula is one of the sky's most famous nebulae. It appears as a dark indentation in the red emission nebula, just below and left of center in this photograph. The horse-head shape is dark because it is an opaque dust cloud in front of the bright red emission nebula. The brightest star on the left is in the belt of the constellation Orion.
