Wisps Surrounding the Horsehead Nebula
NASA APOD · Star Shadows Remote Observatory
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Horsehead Nebula, a famous dark indentation, is just one small part of a much larger cloud of gas and dust. This deep exposure shows the full extent of the complex, with glowing gas and absorbing dust. Located in Orion, this region is a busy star-forming area. Amateur astronomers captured this image using a hydrogen-alpha filter to highlight the red light from hydrogen.
