Comet over California

NASA APOD · P-M Hedén
COSMIC MESSAGE

This colorful sky view shows a fading Comet Holmes at the top, captured on March 4. Below it is the reddish emission nebula NGC 1499, known as the California Nebula for its resemblance to the state's outline. The comet and nebula are at vastly different distances, appearing close together only by chance. The California Nebula is about 100 light-years long and 1,500 light-years away.
